Muhammadiyah Foundation
The Muhammadiyah Foundation is a major Islamic non-government organisation with over 30 million members managing hundreds of schools, colleges and universities across Indonesia. Holmesglen has worked with Muhammadiyah in Indonesia since 2014.
Our initial project operated a jointly branded language training centre in Jakarta at the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang. The centre had over 10,000 graduates from our English language program, supporting undergraduate students at the university.
More recently we have worked across multiple sites in Indonesia providing teacher training for English lecturers across Muhammadiyah universities. Our agreed goal was to improve best teaching practice through English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum design and implementation.
An example is the English Language for Nursing project. Three modules of professional development for English language trainers took place over two years. Drawing more than 50 participants from almost 30 different universities, these sessions built skills in methodology and curriculum.
A final session set up a team of 12 English teachers with 12 nursing educators for the task of designing ESP language materials. This included a series of teleconferences and meetings to negotiate, mediate, moderate and eventually decide approaches, content and pedagogy for a body of materials.
The outcome was a curriculum document comprising more than 300 pages of Indonesian-contextualised resources in the field of English for Nursing.

Electrotechnology training
A new cutting-edge electrical training facility will grow our international training impact in Indonesia.
Partnering with PT ODG Nusantara Jaya (ODG), we’re excited to collaborate on customised electrotechnology training in Jakarta, which will address industrial skills shortages and support individuals with life-changing training opportunities.
The partnership is assisted by Katalis, a business development program, which is aligned with the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Over the next five years, the training facility will:
- Address rising skills demand in the mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, and industrial sectors
- Build local workforce capability
- Increase industry safety
- Create new opportunities for women in trades
