This is a practical “hands-on” course, allowing students to view, touch and style hard materials and soft furnishing textiles for various client design briefs. Students will study interior decoration and learn the practical skills and knowledge required to plan and implement creative decoration solutions for a variety of interior commercial and residential environments.
The program is structured to allow students to complete approximately 25 per cent of the program in each semester. Semester 1 introduces and involves students with how to engage with a customer, providing sales solutions, providing an estimate and costing sheet for the client project, all before they present and sell their interior decoration ideas to the customer. The second semester consists learning about advising customers about product and services, communicating and determining the best environmentally sustainable work practices used in the project work.
Students return in Year 2 and begin their third semester and learn about measurements and calculations, reading and interpreting work documents for their kitchen and bathroom projects. Semester four collates all previous semester skills and knowledge and is applied to the final semester's learning. The learning involves working safely in a team project. The project involves delivering and monitoring a service to customers.
This holistic model of course delivery has been designed to allow learning to be put into practise through projects and folio work. Each assessment is completed individually. There are also some tasks where working in a team environment is a requirement. The combination of units, delivery sequence and duration ensures that sufficient time is given to the development of foundational skills and knowledge.
Throughout the semester, all student learning resources and assessments are made available on Holmesglen's student learning management system, Brightspace. Brightspace has discussion forums where teachers and students interact with online questions and answers tor clarification about a specific topic. Students will also have access to any video recordings and YouTube links to assist the learners to consolidate their learning
When working on campus, students have access to dedicated Industry standard classrooms with access to computers, software and department printers. A resource room is also available to gather samples and materials to produce material sample boards as required.
You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training.
