Studying the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) at Holmesglen

You will also learn safety, contracts, structural principles and materials, estimating and quality management<p>The strength of the program lies in its flexibility to adapt content to cover residential, industrial and commercial low rise construction with special attention to current industry practices and processes.<p>Upon completion, students can expect to have the knowledge and skills required of a builder, site manager, foreman on a residential project or low rise commercial project.<p>This qualification is acceptable to the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) for registration in some of the classifications for Domestic Builder Limited (DB-L). The qualification can support relevant registration in other states and territories.

Entry Requirements

International students, who enrol in this program, must have an IELTS 6.0 and a qualification equivalent to year 12. The Learners have to sit for an LLN test and they should reach an exit level 3 in both Maths and English in the BKSB test organised by the International Centre. <br>Students should have the following skills: <br>• Learning skills to critically evaluate the validity and reliability of information presented to them <br>• Communication skills to present technical and compliance information to different stakeholders in a variety of different formats. .i.e. through reports <br>• Reading skills to interpret and comprehend complex information contained in NCC, standards, acts and regulations. <p>Students learning inside the classroom, are further supplemented by a number of site visits during the various stages of the program In some cases, Applicants may have LLN skills which, whilst not being clearly above the benchmark established for entry, are of a level which grants the applicant a reasonable probability of achieving the intended course outcomes with support. In addition, learners with a low LLN level are directed to the Learning Skill Centre for one on one support. Staff from the Learning Skill Centre are scheduled in the class once a week for 2 hours to provide LLN support

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. To receive this qualification, you must complete 19 units in total, comprising of 11 core units and 8 elective units. Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications.<p>If the learner has already completed other eligible elective units, these will be counted towards completion of this program.

Additional Course Cost

In the event that onsite excursion are allowed and on the schedule, the required personal protective equipment students will need to supply is: <br>Safety boots (steel capped, ankle height) Safety pants <br>Work shirt (waist length jacket, if cold) Safety glasses <br>Hat for sun protection <br>Sunscreen (if exposed to sunlight) <br>Safety Gloves (if handling building materials) <br> <br>If additional safety equipment is required, it will be supplied by the Institute The total cost of these items is between $200 - $250. <br>Students will be required to hold a construction induction card (White Card). To attain this card, students will be required to complete a one-day course (at Holmesglen or another accredited training provider) prior to commencing this course. The cost of this program is between $150 - $200. <br> <br>Detailed consumables and equipment list will be provided to students upon enrolment. Computers are available in tutorial classrooms. <br>• USB connected headset if using class computers while teacher is remote $55 <br> <br>Recommended other items: <br>• Recommended book - George Wilkie: Building Your own Home $ 40 <br>• Recommended for homework - Suitable home computer capable to run Microsoft suite including Word , Excel and PowerPoint . Office365 is available for free. Microsoft Project will be available on the classroom computers. <br>Total equals $545
