If you are eligible and do not wish to pay the SSAF upfront, you can defer your SSAF through SA-HELP. The amount of the loan will be added to your accumulated HELP debt. You can use SA-HELP even if you don’t have any other HELP loan.
What is the Student Services and Amenities Fee?
The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory annual fee payable by all local Higher Education students at Holmesglen.
The SSAF contributes to the cost of providing student support services including counselling, welfare services, learning support and other activities provided by the student support and wellbeing teams.
How much is the SSAF?
The SSAF amount you pay depends on whether you’re a full time or part time student. The annual maximum amount is set by the Government and will vary according to your study load. The 2024 annual maximum amount is $351.
Students studying on campus and online will be charged the same SSAF based on their study load.
The 2024 SSAF rates are:
- Full time (18 credit points or more per semester) - $175.50 per semester
- Part time (less than 18 credit points per semester) - $131.60 per semester
The SSAF is only applicable to local students – international students are not required to pay the SSAF.
You are required to pay this fee at the time of your enrolment, and at the beginning of each semester.
Holmesglen uses the SSAF to contribute towards the cost of the following services:
- Student wellbeing services (including personal, financial and careers counselling, disability support, student accommodation, wellbeing and safety information for students)
- Campus events
- Student trips
- Student clubs
- Holmesglen merchandise
- Student Representative Council
- Recreation activities
Based on feedback from the Student Representative Council in 2023, the following SSAF budget has been allocated for 2024:
- $214,748.50 | Health and wellbeing services
- $15,000 | Campus activities including “O” weeks and recognition of cultural and other significant days
- $7,500 | Subsidised student trips
- $5,000 | Sponsorship of student clubs and other associations
- $4,000 | Institute merchandise for students
- $3,000 | Professional development opportunities for students
- $2,350 | Promotion and delivery of health and wellbeing services to students
- $2,350 | Promotion and delivery of career development opportunities to students.
Total budget allocation $253,948.50
The federal government states that higher education providers must only use SSAF funds for specific purposes. Some examples of what the SSAF can be spent on include:
- Providing food or drink to students on campus
- Supporting a sport or other recreational activity for students
- Supporting the administration of a club where most members are students
- Promoting the health or welfare of students
- Giving students information to help them in their orientation

The SSAF can’t be spent on academic services, nor can it be used to support political parties or to support the election of a person to a Commonwealth, State, Territory or local government body.
